Essential Cookies for Persian New Year (Nowruz)

Persian New Year is only a couple of weeks away, and I thought the perfect introduction to traditional foods for this special celebration would be through Persian cookies. These aren't just any sweets - they're the kind that appear on every Nowruz table, tucked into decorative tins and offered to guests throughout the two-week celebration period. Of course, these cookies aren't just for Nowruz, but we do so much entertaining and celebrating at home this time of year that they tend to be in high demand.

What I love about Persian cookies is how distinct they are from Western cookies. They're characterized by delicate textures, subtle sweetness, and classic Persian flavors like rosewater, cardamom, and pistachios. Most are small enough that you can enjoy several together on a small plate with tea, which is exactly how they're meant to be served. These aren't the only Persian cookies by any means, but I think this is a pretty good introduction to the beautiful world of Persian baking!

I'm still just starting to get back in the swing of producing new content after a year of heavy travel and work on the fundamentals of the website (included the dreadfully tedious but commercially necessary work of search engine optimization, so people can actually find my recipes). One recipe that I managed to shoot last year and post early this year is ali nazik, a classic Turkish dish that's not that well known outside Turkey, but should be on your checklist for your next trip to Istanbul!...

Summer is finally upon us in the Northern Hemisphere, and with it comes barbecue and outdoor cooking! I thought this would be a good time to share some classic grilling recipes (including a couple with a unique Unicorns twist!) that you can make at home, regardless of whether you grill with gas, charcoal, wood pellets, or even indoors on a grill pan! I'm still in Turkey this week with an awesome group of readers - please follow along with us on Instagram @unicornsinthekitchen! One of my favorite things to do when arriving in Istanbul is to head to the nearest bakery to enjoy classic Turkish baked goods. They tend not to be as sweet as what you'd find in North America, yet Turkey's bakery products are still among the world's best! Here's a sample of recipes from the blog to whet your appetite: Classic Simit Show me the recipe! Turkish...
